State College is a quiet university town which is also home to a Big Ten school; a land-grant undergraduate institution combined with a world-class graduate and research center. With a population of about 38,000, it is located in the heart of central Pennsylvania, surrounded by the rural landscapes of the Allegheny mountains. Correspondingly, it offers excellent vistas for hiking and biking, local folk music venues and fresh dairy and produce, beautiful fall foliage and a popular summer arts festival. While the town is relatively quiet (except on football weekends) and the cost of living is low, there are a number of good local restaurants, and a large and vibrant international community.
