Abstract: In 2003 Colorado's Applied Math Department introduced oral assessments into a two-semester Calculus course designed for students at risk of failing calculus BECAUSE OF POOR PREPARATION. Consequential analysis showed that these students earned higher grades, took and passed Calculus II at a higher rate and were more likely to be retained at the university than their counterparts. Since then, the department has offered oral assessments to all Calculus I students, resulting in a drop in failure rates and an imporvement in grades and understanding.
