Polynomial systems: numerical methods and applications

Abstract: Polynomial systems arise naturally in many applications. We will give a brief, high-level view of the range of numerical methods for solving such problems, along with classical applications (e.g., kinematics) and modern ones (e.g., chemical reaction networks). Finally, we will point out some outstanding numerical issues that need attention. No knowledge of (numerical) algebraic geometry will be assumed.
