From topology to numbers

Abstract: One of the main questions of Grothendieck's "Esquisse d'un Programme" was to give a topological and combinatorial description of the absolute Galois group of the rational numbers (that is, of the automorphism group of field of all algebraic numbers). The question generated a really impressive research activity and body of work, with seminal papers by Deligne, Drinfel'd, and Ihara, followed by many others. The plan for the talk is to give a light introduction to the subject, and briefly discuss a few old results and a new one.
