Variational integrators for ideal MHD equations

Abstract: In this talk, we introduce variational integrators for ideal MHD equations. During numerical simulations of ideal MHD, it is important to preserve the intrinsic properties of the system. One way for deriving structure-preserving methods is variational integrators. The main idea is to discretize Hamilton's principle, which determine the equations of motion by a variational problem. Compared with discretising the equations directly, variational integrators preserve a discrete version of the symplectic form, admire discrete Noether's theorem, and preserve global energy and magnetic helicity exactly.
