Abstract: The complex Gelfand-Zeitlin system consists of an an integrable system on the general linear Lie algebra or the orthogonal Lie algebra. We explain some new results on this integrable system established using results from algebraic groups, including Luna's results on fibers of invariant theory quotients. This is based on joint work with Mark Colarusso.
