Abstract: After giving some background, I will explain the index theory and K-theory of topological insulators. Because of time reversal symmetry, topological insulators are characterized by a Z/2-valued invariant. This topological Z/2 invariant can be understood as a mod 2 index theorem, which can be also obtained as an index pairing between KR-homology and KR-theory. If time permits, I will give a generalization of this story in noncommutative geometry (NCG).
