Gauge theories and Lie groupoids

Abstract: After briefly reviewing Lie groupoids and Lie algebroids, which are generalizations of Lie groups and their Lie algebras, we first explain why in the (standard) construction of gauge theories only Lie groups seem to be admissible. While the Poisson sigma model already provides an example of a topological field theory based on a target Lie algebroid symmetry, we show that even the gauging of the standard sigma model, governed by a Riemannian manifold on the target, can lead naturally to Lie algebroids/groupoids, an option ignored up to now.
